Melbourne, FL – Another active afternoon of thunderstorms is expected across east-central Florida today, with forecasters warning that some storms could become strong to locally severe, bringing damaging wind gusts, flooding rainfall, and even a brief tornado.

According to the National Weather Service in Melbourne, scattered to numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and continue into the evening as the east coast sea breeze moves inland. The greatest potential for stronger storms is expected between 1 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Forecasters say dry air associated with the Saharan Air Layer may enhance thunderstorm intensity, allowing storms to produce wind gusts of 40 to 60 mph, frequent cloud-to-ground lightning, torrential rainfall capable of localized flooding, and a brief tornado that cannot be ruled out.

Communities including Orlando, Melbourne, Daytona Beach, Kissimmee, Sanford, Leesburg, Titusville, Vero Beach, Port St. Lucie, and surrounding areas could experience rapidly changing weather conditions during the afternoon and evening commute.

Before storms arrive, temperatures will climb into the low to mid-90s, with heat index values between 102 and 107 degrees, creating moderate heat risk across the region.

Residents should remain weather-aware throughout the day, seek sturdy shelter immediately when thunder is heard, avoid flooded roadways, and have multiple ways to receive weather warnings in case severe storms develop.
