Buffalo, NY – Dangerous heat and humidity are expected across western and north-central New York on Tuesday, prompting a Heat Advisory as temperatures and humidity combine to create triple-digit heat index values in parts of the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, a Heat Advisory is in effect through 6 p.m. Tuesday for much of western and north-central New York. Forecasters expect maximum heat index values in the mid- and upper 90s, with low 100s possible across portions of the Lake Plains, Genesee Valley, and Finger Lakes.
The most dangerous conditions are expected between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., when prolonged exposure to the heat could increase the risk of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, especially for older adults, young children, outdoor workers, and those without access to air conditioning.
Communities including Buffalo, Rochester, Batavia, Geneseo, Lockport, Niagara Falls, Warsaw, Geneva, and Watertown could experience the highest heat index values during the afternoon.
Overnight conditions will remain uncomfortable, with temperatures only falling into the lower to middle 70s, offering little relief from the daytime heat.
Relief is expected to arrive on Wednesday as a cold front moves through the region, bringing slightly cooler temperatures and decreasing humidity throughout the day.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks if working outdoors, limit strenuous afternoon activities, and never leave children or pets unattended inside vehicles.
