Montgomery County, TX – A 33-year-old man died after being swept away by a river current while fishing Sunday evening in Montgomery County, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 6:18 p.m. Sunday, July 12, 2026, after receiving a 911 call reporting a possible drowning near the intersection of Hill Road and Sorters Road.
Investigators said Jose Negrete, 33, was fishing in the river when he was reportedly overcome by the current and began struggling to swim to safety. Friends and acquaintances who were with him immediately attempted to help from the shoreline but were unable to reach him.
Emergency responders from multiple agencies searched the area, and the North Montgomery County Fire Department Dive Team later located Negrete deceased approximately 50 feet from the shoreline.
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Major Crimes Unit and Crime Scene Investigators responded to conduct the investigation. Authorities said the preliminary investigation indicates the incident was a tragic accident, and there is no evidence of criminal activity related to the death.
Officials did not release additional information about river conditions at the time of the incident.
The Sheriff’s Office reminds residents to use caution around rivers and waterways, particularly where currents may appear calm but can quickly become dangerous. Anyone fishing or recreating near moving water is encouraged to wear a life jacket and remain aware of changing conditions.
The investigation remains ongoing, although authorities do not expect foul play.
