La Crosse, Wisconsin – Temperatures are set to surge into the upper 70s and low 80s by mid-afternoon Monday, pushing multiple cities within reach of long-standing March 30 records and rapidly accelerating snowmelt and early-season fire concerns.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, highs will peak between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. Monday, with Decorah, Iowa targeting 84°F and Prairie du Chien nearing 83°F—both matching or exceeding records set in 1986. Austin, Minnesota could hit 79°F by late afternoon, challenging a record that has stood since 1978.
Communities along the Mississippi River, including La Crosse and Winona, will see temperatures climb to around 80°F, intensifying runoff into storm drains and smaller tributaries. Wisconsin DNR officials warn that dry vegetation combined with warm, breezy conditions could elevate wildfire risk through early evening, especially in rural areas near Sparta and Viroqua.
Drivers may notice soft road shoulders and isolated pavement stress on lesser-traveled routes as ground frost weakens. Residents are urged to clear storm drains, avoid open burning, and stay hydrated during outdoor work.
The warmth holds through sunset before cooler air begins to return overnight. Additional advisories may be issued if fire conditions worsen into Monday evening.
