Chestertown, Maryland – A fast-moving fire could spread in minutes across Maryland’s Eastern Shore this afternoon as dry air and gusty winds combine to create volatile conditions through sunset Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, relative humidity will drop to around 30 percent while southwest winds increase to 15 to 20 mph, with gusts reaching 25 mph. That combination significantly raises the risk of rapid fire growth across Kent, Queen Anne’s, Talbot, and Caroline counties through the late afternoon hours.

Communities including Chestertown, Centreville, Easton, and Denton face the highest risk window between midday and early evening. Dry grasses and brush act as fuel, allowing even small ignition sources like discarded cigarette butts or unattended debris burns to spread quickly. Local fire crews warn that containment could become difficult within minutes under these conditions.

Officials strongly discourage any outdoor burning today. Residents should secure trailer chains, avoid parking on dry grass, and properly dispose of smoking materials. Even routine yard work involving sparks could trigger a fire.

Conditions will begin to improve near sunset as winds ease and humidity levels recover, but the risk remains elevated until then. Additional advisories may be issued if conditions worsen.
