Rutland, VT – A Rutland man was arrested Saturday evening after authorities say he was allegedly driving the wrong way on a one-way street and showed signs of impairment.
According to the Rutland County Sheriffโs Office, the incident happened Saturday around 7:44 p.m. near Marble Street and Thrall Avenue in West Rutland. Deputies say Corporal Gregory Ricketts, assigned to the Vermont State Office of Highway Safety DUI Enforcement Unit, observed a vehicle allegedly traveling the wrong direction on Campbell Avenue, which is designated as a one-way roadway.
Officials said a traffic stop was conducted, and the operator was identified as Darwin C. Harder, 77, of Rutland. During the stop, Harder allegedly exhibited multiple signs of impairment. Authorities reported that Harder was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests but allegedly failed to complete them satisfactorily.
Harder was subsequently taken into custody and transported to the Rutland barracks for processing. He was issued a criminal citation to appear in Rutland Superior Court โ Criminal Division at a later date to answer to a charge of allegedly operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
Authorities said Harder was later released to a sober adult following processing.
The Rutland County Sheriffโs Office continues to emphasize the dangers of impaired driving and urges motorists to plan ahead, use designated drivers, or arrange alternative transportation to prevent similar incidents.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
