Barton, WI – A chimney fire in the Town of Barton prompted a significant emergency response Saturday evening, temporarily shutting down a portion of County Trunk Highway D and causing tens of thousands of dollars in damage to a home.
According to the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the fire was reported at approximately 6:20 p.m. Saturday at a residence located along CTH D. Deputies, along with the West Bend Fire Department, responded after a passing driver spotted flames coming from the east side exterior of the home near the chimney and called 911.
Authorities said the homeowner was inside at the time and unaware of the fire until the passerby made contact. Two occupants and four dogs were inside the residence but were able to evacuate safely. Officials noted that a fire had been actively burning in the home’s family room fireplace prior to the incident.
Fire crews arrived quickly and began suppression efforts, extinguishing the flames before they could spread beyond the chimney area. The fire was largely contained, though minor smoke damage was reported inside the home. Exterior damage was also noted on the east side of the structure, including the roof and chimney.
Damage is estimated at approximately $50,000. Investigators said the fire appears to have originated in the chimney and is believed to be accidental.
CTH D between Victoria Drive and Kettle View Drive South was closed for about two hours as emergency crews worked the scene. Multiple departments assisted, including Jackson, St. Lawrence, Newburg, Kohlsville, Allenton and Kewaskum fire departments.
No injuries were reported among civilians or first responders.
