Spokane, WA – Travelers heading over mountain passes could face slick, icy conditions by late Sunday night as snow returns and temperatures drop after sunset.

According to the National Weather Service in Spokane, snow will begin developing Sunday afternoon and continue into the overnight hours across higher elevations, including Stevens Pass, Snoqualmie Pass, and Lookout Pass. While daytime conditions will mainly feature wet roads, colder air arriving by late evening will allow surfaces to freeze, creating hazardous travel conditions.

Winds will add to the impact, with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph across the Columbia Basin, Wenatchee area, and West Plains through Sunday evening. These gusts could reduce visibility at times and make driving difficult for high-profile vehicles, especially along I-90 and exposed roadways.

Lower elevations, including Spokane and surrounding cities, are expected to remain mostly rain with breezy conditions, limiting widespread snow impacts outside the mountains.

Drivers planning overnight travel should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, carry traction gear, and allow extra time. Conditions are expected to improve by Monday morning, but additional updates may follow as the system moves through.
