Tucson, AZ – Temperatures are surging about 10 degrees above normal today, and scattered thunderstorms could develop by late afternoon, bringing brief downpours and lightning across southern Arizona.
According to the National Weather Service in Tucson, highs will reach the low 90s in Tucson, with upper 90s near Phoenix and Gila Bend. Storm chances increase through the afternoon and evening, especially south of Tucson, where probabilities climb to 30% to 50% near Nogales and Sierra Vista.
Drivers along I-10, I-19, and State Route 90 should be prepared for sudden changes in visibility, gusty winds, and slick roads during any storms that develop. While rainfall totals are expected to remain light—generally around a tenth of an inch—localized heavier bursts are possible under stronger cells.
Communities including Green Valley, Benson, and Douglas could see brief impacts during the evening commute. Lightning and isolated gusty winds will be the primary hazards.
Residents should stay weather-aware this afternoon and avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms. Storm chances taper later tonight, but additional updates may be issued if coverage increases.
