Portland, ME – A soaking rain is set to move into Maine by Wednesday morning, with a sharp shift to wintry conditions by late week that could impact travel across much of the state.

According to the National Weather Service in Gray, a warming trend will push temperatures into the 50s and 60s ahead of a midweek system. Rain will become widespread Wednesday, with steady precipitation expected throughout the day across southern and central Maine, including Portland, Augusta, and Lewiston.

By Thursday, colder air begins to filter back in, changing rain to a wintry mix and eventually snow in some areas, especially inland and higher elevations. Roads along I-95 and U.S. Route 1 could become slick as temperatures fall and precipitation type shifts.

Northern areas and interior locations may see more prolonged snow into Friday, while coastal regions deal with a mix of rain and wet snow. Reduced visibility and slushy road conditions are possible during peak travel times late Thursday into Friday morning.

Residents should prepare for rapidly changing conditions, including wet roads midweek followed by potential icing and snow. Additional advisories are likely as the timing of the transition becomes clearer later this week.
