Omaha, NE – Fires could spread rapidly across eastern Nebraska today, with very high fire danger creating immediate risks for anyone outdoors as warm, dry, and breezy conditions take hold.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, temperatures will climb into the mid-70s to low 80s this afternoon while south to southwest winds gust between 25 and 30 mph. Relative humidity values dropping as low as 19 to 35 percent will further dry out vegetation, making ignition and rapid fire growth more likely.
The highest risk includes Omaha, Lincoln, and surrounding communities, especially along open areas near I-80 and Highway 75 where dry grasses can ignite easily. Officials warn that fires may spread quickly and become difficult to control, with even previously burned areas capable of reigniting.
Residents should avoid outdoor burning, use caution with equipment that could spark, and properly dispose of cigarettes. Monitoring any recent burn areas is critical, as flare-ups remain possible under these conditions.
The elevated fire threat will persist through the evening before conditions gradually improve overnight. Additional advisories may be issued if winds increase or humidity drops further.
