Gaylord, Michigan – The morning starts comfortably across northern Lower Michigan, but don’t let the cool sunrise fool you. Sunshine is quickly taking over, temperatures are climbing, and one of the hottest stretches of the summer is unfolding away from the Great Lakes shoreline.
According to the National Weather Service in Gaylord, a Heat Advisory remains in effect from noon today until 8 a.m. Tuesday for much of northern Lower Michigan. Actual air temperatures will climb into the upper 80s and lower 90s, while heat index values between 97 and 103 degrees are expected. Overnight temperatures will struggle to fall below 75 degrees in some locations, increasing the risk of heat-related illness.
The advisory includes Otsego, Grand Traverse, Emmet, Cheboygan, Charlevoix, Leelanau, Kalkaska, Crawford, Roscommon, Wexford, Manistee, Missaukee, Benzie, Antrim and several surrounding counties.
Gaylord is expected to reach 89 degrees today, followed by 92 degrees Tuesday before temperatures ease into the mid-80s Wednesday. Travelers along I-75, US-131, M-32 and M-72 should prepare for intense afternoon sunshine and rapidly warming pavement. Outdoor recreation, road construction and youth sports will become more challenging during the hottest part of the day.
While severe thunderstorms and flash flooding are expected across parts of the Plains and Midwest, northern Michigan’s primary concern remains dangerous heat and humidity. Only a slight chance of an early-day thunderstorm exists before several days of mainly dry weather return.
Drink water frequently, wear light-colored clothing, and take breaks in air-conditioned spaces. Check on older adults, young children and pets, especially during the afternoon and evening.
The Climate Prediction Center continues to favor above-normal temperatures during the next 6 to 10 days, suggesting summer warmth could linger well into next week.
