Memphis, Tenn. – A stretch of cooler-than-normal July weather will continue across the Mid-South through midweek as repeated rounds of showers and thunderstorms keep afternoon temperatures below 90 degrees before summer heat returns later this week.

According to the National Weather Service in Memphis, daily chances for showers and thunderstorms will continue through Wednesday, with the most widespread rainfall expected Tuesday and Wednesday as a weather disturbance moves across the region. Rain chances will be highest during the afternoon and evening hours, with some communities seeing probabilities between 60% and 85%.

Temperatures across western Tennessee, northern Mississippi, eastern Arkansas and the Missouri Bootheel are expected to remain several degrees below average through Wednesday. Highs will generally range from the mid-80s to upper 80s, roughly 5 to 8 degrees below normal for mid-July. Memphis is expected to reach 87 degrees Monday, 86 Tuesday and 89 Wednesday before climbing back into the lower 90s later in the week.

Communities including Memphis, Jackson, Corinth, Tupelo, Oxford, Jonesboro, Dyersburg and Clarksdale should expect periods of heavy rain, lightning and brief downpours with the strongest afternoon thunderstorms. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, locally heavy rainfall could create ponding on roads during periods of heavier rain.

Rain chances begin to diminish by Thursday as high pressure strengthens across the region, allowing warmer temperatures to return. By Friday and into the weekend, highs are expected to climb back into the lower to middle 90s, bringing a return to more typical midsummer conditions.
