La Crosse, Wis. – Residents across western Wisconsin and southeast Minnesota should prepare for another stretch of dangerous afternoon heat through Tuesday, with heat index values climbing into the mid-90s to around 100 degrees during the hottest part of each day. Anyone working or spending time outdoors will face an increased risk of heat-related illness during the afternoon and early evening hours.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, hot temperatures will continue Monday into Tuesday, with the highest heat index values expected from late morning through early evening. Communities from La Crosse, Black River Falls, Decorah and Viroqua to Rochester, Winona and Austin are expected to experience oppressive humidity that will make conditions feel significantly hotter than the actual air temperature.
High temperatures are forecast to reach the upper 80s and lower 90s across much of the region, while humidity pushes apparent temperatures close to 100 degrees. Urban areas, athletic fields, construction sites and locations with limited shade will experience the greatest impacts during the afternoon.
Health officials recommend taking frequent breaks in air conditioning or shade, drinking plenty of water before feeling thirsty and avoiding strenuous outdoor activity during peak heating hours. Lightweight clothing and sunscreen are also encouraged, and children or pets should never be left inside parked vehicles, where temperatures can become life-threatening within minutes.
The National Weather Service says the hottest conditions are expected to persist through Tuesday, and additional heat-related statements or advisories may be issued if conditions warrant. Residents should continue monitoring the latest updates and be prepared for another round of dangerous afternoon heat.
