Darlington, SC – Temperatures dropping to 32°F by 2 a.m. Sunday could damage crops and sensitive plants across Darlington County, creating a narrow but critical window for residents to act before sunrise.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a Freeze Warning is in effect from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Sunday, with sub-freezing temperatures expected across Darlington, Hartsville, and North Hartsville. The agency warns that even brief exposure to freezing conditions can kill unprotected vegetation.

The cold snap will settle in overnight as clear skies and light winds allow heat to escape quickly. Rural areas and low-lying spots may see the most widespread frost, especially along open farmland and near secondary roads where temperatures can dip fastest.

Residents are urged to cover or bring in tender plants, disconnect outdoor hoses, and check on early spring crops. Farmers across northeastern South Carolina could see localized losses if precautions aren’t taken before midnight.

Conditions will improve quickly after 9 a.m. Sunday as temperatures rise above freezing, but additional advisories could be issued if similar overnight patterns develop early next week.
