Mettawa, IL – A 43-year-old Mundelein man was killed Monday night after his motorcycle collided with an SUV at a busy Mettawa intersection, according to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded at approximately 8:50 p.m. Monday, July 6, to the intersection of Route 60 and St. Marys Road for a reported crash involving injuries.

When first responders arrived, they found the driver of a 2022 Honda motorcycle unconscious and not breathing. Life-saving efforts were attempted at the scene, but the man was pronounced dead.

Investigators said the preliminary investigation indicates the motorcyclist was traveling westbound on Route 60 and proceeding through a green traffic signal when a 2024 Chevrolet Trax, driven by a 55-year-old Waukegan woman, was traveling eastbound and made a left turn onto northbound St. Marys Road.

Authorities said the motorcycle was unable to avoid the collision and struck the passenger side of the Chevrolet.

The impact threw the motorcyclist from the motorcycle, which then continued forward and struck a Hyundai sedan that was facing southbound on St. Marys Road. None of the three occupants inside the Hyundai were injured.

The driver of the Chevrolet sustained minor injuries and is cooperating with investigators.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene, and an autopsy has been scheduled. The identity of the motorcyclist has not yet been released pending notification of family.

The crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team.
