Greenville, South Carolina – Outdoor burning is shut down across South Carolina and Georgia right now as dry air and gusty winds sharply increase the risk of fast-moving wildfires through Sunday evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, critically low humidity levels combined with dry vegetation and wind gusts are creating conditions where fires can ignite and spread within minutes. A burn ban is in effect across both states through at least late evening, impacting both rural and metro areas.

In South Carolina, the restriction covers the Upstate, Midlands, and Lowcountry, including Greenville, Spartanburg, Columbia, and Charleston. In Georgia, counties from the northeast mountains through metro Atlanta are also under heightened fire danger. Officials warn that even small sparks from vehicles, grills, or discarded cigarettes could trigger fires that threaten homes and infrastructure.

Drivers are urged to avoid parking on dry grass, and residents should not use outdoor grills on combustible surfaces. Fire officials also recommend keeping a 10-foot clearance around any heat source and ensuring equipment like tow chains do not drag along roadways.

The elevated fire threat will persist until humidity levels recover after sunset. Additional advisories could be issued if dry conditions continue into early next week.
