Huntsville, Alabama – Fires can ignite and spread within minutes across North Alabama today as dry air and gusty winds peak through the afternoon, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors.

According to the National Weather Service in Huntsville, a Red Flag Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. CDT Saturday for Lauderdale, Madison, Morgan, Jackson, and surrounding counties. Northeast winds are sustained at 10 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching 30 mph, while relative humidity drops as low as 17 percent, a critical threshold for rapid fire growth.

Communities from Florence to Huntsville and into Fort Payne face the highest risk during the midday and afternoon hours. Open fields, wooded areas, and even roadside ditches along corridors like I-565 and U.S. 72 could see fires spread quickly if ignited. Utility crews are also monitoring conditions as strong gusts increase the chance of downed lines sparking dry vegetation.

Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, including debris piles and grills that produce embers. Secure trailer chains, dispose of cigarettes properly, and keep vehicles off dry grass to prevent accidental ignition.

Conditions will begin easing after sunset, but officials warn that any fires started today could continue burning into the night. Additional advisories may be issued if dry conditions persist into Sunday.
