Lake County, IN – A driver escaped without injury after a vehicle entered the Kankakee River Monday evening near the Shady Shores area, prompting a response from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and its dive team.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded Monday evening to reports of a vehicle that had entered the Kankakee River near Shady Shores.

Officials said the driver was able to safely exit the vehicle before first responders arrived and was not injured.

The department’s Dive Team was called to the scene to assist with the recovery operation. Working alongside a towing service, dive team members located, secured, and safely removed the submerged vehicle from the river.

Authorities have not released information on what caused the vehicle to enter the water, and no additional details about the driver or the circumstances surrounding the incident have been made public.

The investigation remains ongoing.

In a statement, Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr. thanked the Sheriff’s Department Dive Team and the towing personnel for their efforts in safely recovering the vehicle and helping protect the river environment during the operation.

No road closures or environmental concerns were immediately reported.
