Blacksburg, Virginia – 24°F overnight lows are freezing roads and pipes through Sunday morning, with gusty winds increasing impacts across southwest Virginia.
Cold, dry air is dominating the region today, with highs only reaching the upper 40s to upper 50s despite mostly clear skies. Gusty north winds of 20+ mph are adding to the chill, especially across higher elevations and exposed areas along the Blue Ridge and New River Valley.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, temperatures will drop quickly after sunset, falling into the mid-20s to low 30s by early Sunday morning. Areas including Roanoke, Blacksburg, Wytheville, and Galax are expected to see widespread frost and freeze conditions, with the coldest readings in valleys and rural locations.
The combination of freezing temperatures and lingering wind could create isolated slick spots on bridges and elevated roadways along I-81 and Route 460 during early Sunday travel. Sensitive vegetation and early spring crops are also at risk, along with unprotected outdoor plumbing.
Residents should cover plants, protect pipes, and use caution during early morning travel when temperatures are at their lowest.
Conditions improve Sunday as winds shift and temperatures rise into the mid-50s to low 60s, with a continued warming trend into early next week.
