Springfield, Illinois – 35°F morning lows are creating patchy frost and slowing early travel before a rapid warm-up and incoming thunderstorms beginning late Monday night.
Cool, dry air is holding across central Illinois today, with highs reaching 50°F to 55°F under sunny skies. Early morning temperatures in the mid-30s may allow for localized frost on grassy and elevated surfaces, especially in rural areas around Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington, and Champaign.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, dry and stable conditions will persist through Sunday as high pressure remains in control. Temperatures will begin to climb Sunday into the low to mid-60s, followed by a sharper warm-up Monday with highs pushing into the mid to upper 70s.
By Tuesday, temperatures are expected to surge into the low 80s across much of central Illinois, setting the stage for a more active weather pattern. Increasing humidity and strengthening winds will support scattered showers and thunderstorms beginning late Monday night and continuing through Tuesday and Wednesday.
Travel impacts today remain minimal, but changing conditions early next week could affect commutes, especially along I-55, I-72, and I-74 where periods of rain and thunderstorms may reduce visibility and create slick roads.
Residents should take advantage of the dry weekend to prepare for a wetter pattern ahead. Additional updates and possible advisories are expected as storm timing becomes clearer early next week.
