Eastern Kentucky – 28°F temperatures are freezing crops and creating hazardous early-morning conditions through 10 a.m. Saturday, with additional impacts expected again late tonight into Sunday morning.

Sub-freezing air remains locked across the region this morning, with valley locations dropping into the upper 20s and ridges hovering near 30°F. The freeze is already impacting agriculture and outdoor infrastructure, especially in low-lying areas where cold air pools. Conditions will briefly improve late this morning before another round of freezing temperatures redevelops overnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Jackson, a Freeze Warning remains in effect until 10 a.m. Saturday for much of eastern Kentucky, including Pike, Floyd, Perry, Knox, Bell, and Harlan counties. A Freeze Watch then takes over late tonight through Sunday morning for the same region, including cities such as Pikeville, Hazard, London, Harlan, and Morehead.

The biggest concern is repeated damage to early spring crops, fruit trees, and gardens. Valleys are most at risk for temperatures dropping into the upper 20s again overnight. Frost formation will be widespread, and unprotected pipes or irrigation systems could sustain damage.

Residents should protect plants immediately this morning and again before midnight tonight. Cover vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and insulate exposed plumbing. Travel impacts are minimal, but cold-sensitive systems could fail if precautions are not taken.

Temperatures will climb above freezing by late morning today, then fall again overnight before rising after sunrise Sunday. Additional cold weather alerts remain possible if the pattern continues into early next week.
