Springfield, IL – An Illinois agricultural advocacy organization is criticizing a new U.S. Supreme Court decision involving Monsanto, saying the ruling limits the ability of farmers and others to pursue certain state-level legal claims against pesticide manufacturers.
According to the Illinois Stewardship Alliance (ISA), the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Monsanto Company v. Durnell restricts state-law claims alleging pesticide manufacturers failed to adequately warn users about potential health risks. The organization said the ruling represents a setback for transparency and accountability in agriculture.
“We are deeply disappointed by this ruling,” ISA Executive Director Liz Moran Stelk said in a statement. “Farmers deserve access to complete and transparent information about the products they use, the risks those products may pose to their health, their families, and their land, and the ability to seek accountability when they believe critical information has been withheld.”
According to the organization, ISA joined a coalition of farmer and farmworker organizations that filed an amicus brief supporting Missouri farmer John Durnell. The coalition argued that federal pesticide regulations should not prevent states from providing additional protections when concerns arise about product safety.
The Alliance also rejected arguments that greater corporate accountability would negatively affect agriculture, saying farmers should have access to independent information and meaningful choices when selecting agricultural products.
Despite the ruling, ISA said it plans to continue advocating for farming practices that reduce reliance on synthetic inputs while supporting the long-term resilience of farms and rural communities.
The organization is also calling on policymakers, regulators, researchers and agricultural leaders to pursue stronger transparency measures and address industry consolidation that it says limits farmers’ options.
The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision is expected to have implications for future litigation involving pesticide labeling and product warning requirements nationwide.
