Walworth County, WI – Authorities are investigating a fatal drowning after first responders recovered a man from Lake Ivanhoe Thursday afternoon following reports of an overturned kayak.
According to the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched at approximately 3:20 p.m. Thursday, June 25, after receiving a report of a kayak floating in the middle of Lake Ivanhoe in the Town of Lyons. At the time of the initial call, it was unclear whether anyone had been in or near the kayak.
When deputies and officers from the Bloomfield Police Department arrived, they observed an overturned kayak approximately 150 yards offshore. Investigators then determined a white adult male was floating next to the kayak while wearing a life jacket. Officials said the man did not respond to deputies, who used binoculars to determine he appeared unconscious.
Lyons Fire and Rescue responded to the scene and requested a MABAS Division 103 Water Rescue response. The Town of Delavan Air Boat was launched, and rescuers recovered the man from the lake.
The individual was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 4:53 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to assist with the investigation. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity, and the circumstances surrounding how the man entered the water have not yet been disclosed.
The drowning remains under investigation by the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office.
