Kansas City, Missouri – 20°F temperatures are freezing crops and threatening pipes from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday across the Kansas City region, creating hazardous early-morning conditions.

A widespread hard freeze is settling over eastern Kansas and much of Missouri overnight, with the coldest readings expected before sunrise Saturday. Urban and rural areas alike face impacts as temperatures drop well below freezing, stressing infrastructure and damaging early-season vegetation.

According to the National Weather Service, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from 1 a.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday, with lows plunging to near 20 degrees across counties including Jackson, Clay, Platte, Buchanan, and Cass in Missouri, along with Johnson and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. Major population centers such as Kansas City, Independence, St. Joseph, and Overland Park are all included in the warning zone.

Key corridors including I-70, I-35, and I-29 may see slick spots develop on bridges and overpasses during the pre-dawn hours. Outlying communities from Kirksville to Sedalia and Maryville face the highest agricultural risk, especially where early planting has begun.

Residents should protect exposed pipes, cover or bring in sensitive plants, and ensure pets have adequate shelter. Increased heating demand may strain local power systems during peak overnight usage.

Temperatures will recover into Saturday afternoon, but the damage risk will already be realized for unprotected vegetation. Additional cold advisories remain possible if clear skies and calm winds persist into early Sunday morning.
