San Luis Obispo County, CA – As Fourth of July celebrations approach, authorities in San Luis Obispo County are increasing efforts to curb the possession, sale and use of illegal fireworks, including offering cash rewards for information that leads to arrests.
According to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office, the agency is partnering with San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers to identify individuals allegedly possessing illegal fireworks with the intent to sell them. Crime Stoppers is offering rewards of up to $500 for information that results in the identification and arrest of suspects.
Officials say illegal fireworks pose significant public safety risks, particularly during California’s dry summer season. The sheriff’s office warned that illegal fireworks can spark wildfires, cause serious injuries and result in extensive property damage.
Authorities also noted that loud explosions can negatively affect pets, livestock, military veterans and others who may be sensitive to sudden noises.
According to the sheriff’s office, residents who have information about the possession or sale of illegal fireworks can contact the Fireworks Reporting Hotline at 805-781-1933. Anonymous tips may also be submitted through San Luis Obispo County Crime Stoppers by phone, through the P3 Tips mobile app or online.
Officials emphasized that residents should not call 911 solely to report illegal fireworks activity unless an emergency situation exists.
The sheriff’s office reminded residents that fireworks, except for permitted professional displays, are prohibited in all unincorporated areas of San Luis Obispo County. Authorities say enforcement efforts will continue throughout the holiday season as deputies work to reduce fire dangers and protect communities.
With Independence Day celebrations approaching, officials are urging residents to attend authorized fireworks displays and leave fireworks enforcement to trained professionals.
