San Francisco, Calif. – A calm-looking ocean can become dangerous in seconds, and that’s exactly what forecasters are warning beachgoers about along Northern California’s coastline this weekend and into midweek. Powerful sneaker waves and strong rip currents are creating a growing public safety concern from Point Reyes to Monterey Bay.

According to the National Weather Service in San Francisco, a Beach Hazards Statement remains in effect through Wednesday afternoon for Pacific Coast beaches, including the Coastal North Bay, San Francisco Peninsula Coast, Northern Monterey Bay, and the Big Sur Coast. Forecasters warn that sneaker waves can suddenly surge far up the shoreline, sweeping people from rocks, jetties, beaches, and coastal trails.

The risk extends beyond swimmers. Visitors exploring popular locations such as Ocean Beach, Baker Beach, Half Moon Bay, Point Reyes National Seashore, and portions of the Monterey coastline should remain alert near the water’s edge.

Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are expected through midweek. Localized beach erosion is also possible as wave action continues along exposed coastlines.

Meanwhile, inland weather remains relatively comfortable. Morning clouds and patches of marine influence will gradually give way to sunshine Sunday afternoon. High temperatures will stay in the upper 60s around San Francisco before warming into the upper 60s and lower 70s early next week.

By Monday and Tuesday, sunnier skies become more common across the Bay Area. Highs climb to around 69 Monday and near 71 Tuesday in San Francisco, offering classic early-summer conditions away from the coast.

While severe storms, flash flooding, and tornado threats continue across parts of the Plains and Midwest, Northern California’s most significant weather concern remains along the shoreline. Stay off rocks, jetties, and piers, and never turn your back on the ocean.
