Los Angeles, Calif. – Bright sunshine is returning across East Los Angeles, but a much bigger weather story is already taking shape. Cooler morning air and patchy fog are giving way to a steady warming trend that could bring the hottest temperatures of the season so far by midweek.

According to the National Weather Service in Los Angeles/Oxnard, an Extreme Heat Watch remains in effect from Tuesday morning through Thursday evening for Downtown Los Angeles and surrounding communities. Temperatures could reach 88 degrees downtown, with the hottest conditions expected Wednesday and Thursday.

Sunday afternoon will remain relatively comfortable by Southern California standards, with highs reaching the mid-70s across East Los Angeles. Morning clouds will gradually clear, allowing more sunshine through the afternoon. Monday brings another step upward, with highs approaching 78 degrees before temperatures accelerate into the mid-80s by Tuesday.

Air quality also remains a concern. According to regional air quality officials, an Air Quality Alert continues for portions of East Los Angeles and Boyle Heights due to elevated fine particle pollution. Sensitive groups, including older adults, children, and people with respiratory conditions, should limit prolonged outdoor activity when air quality worsens.

Drivers along Interstate 5, Interstate 10, U.S. 101, and Interstate 710 should expect periods of reduced visibility during patchy morning fog through Monday. Conditions improve by afternoon as sunshine returns.

The broader western U.S. pattern continues to favor hotter and drier weather heading into the new workweek. While severe storms remain focused across the Plains and Midwest, Southern California’s primary concern shifts toward heat stress and air quality impacts.

Residents should begin preparing now. Stay hydrated, check cooling options, and avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day by midweek. Additional heat-related advisories may be issued as temperatures continue climbing.
