Reno, Nev. – Bright sunshine is already dominating the Truckee Meadows, and a noticeable heat surge is beginning to unfold across northern Nevada. Pavement temperatures will climb quickly this afternoon, while a stretch of increasingly hot weather develops through the first half of the workweek.
According to the National Weather Service, Reno is expected to reach around 89 degrees Sunday before temperatures rise to 94 degrees Monday, 97 degrees Tuesday, and 96 degrees Wednesday. Dry air and abundant sunshine will remain the primary weather story across Washoe County.
The warming trend arrives as much of the nation faces active weather. Severe thunderstorms, flash flooding, large hail, and isolated tornadoes remain possible across portions of the Plains and Midwest. Meanwhile, the Great Basin and Intermountain West continue experiencing warmer-than-average temperatures and elevated fire-weather concerns.
Travel conditions along Interstate 80, U.S. Highway 395, and Interstate 580 should remain favorable. However, motorists should prepare for increasing afternoon heat. Vehicles parked in direct sunlight can become dangerous within minutes.
Meteorologists are tracking a strong ridge of high pressure settling across the West. Latest weather data shows temperatures climbing nearly 12 degrees from Sunday through Tuesday. Overnight lows also trend warmer, rising from the mid-50s into the lower 60s by early next week.
Outdoor recreation remains popular across the Reno-Sparks area this time of year. Hikers, cyclists, and event-goers should carry extra water and limit strenuous activity during peak afternoon heat. Pet owners should also check pavement temperatures before walks.
