Kansas City, Missouri – Fire danger will surge again across eastern Kansas and western Missouri Saturday afternoon as gusty winds and extremely dry air create conditions where fires could spread rapidly across the region.

The heightened risk follows a similar stretch Friday, prompting officials to warn residents that even small sparks could ignite fast-moving grass fires across fields and rural areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City/Pleasant Hill, a Red Flag Warning from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday will cover a large portion of eastern Kansas and northern to western Missouri. South winds will strengthen to 15 to 20 mph with gusts near 25 mph, while humidity drops to 15 to 25 percent.

These conditions allow fires to grow quickly and become difficult to control, especially in areas with dry grasses left from winter.

Communities across Kansas City, Independence, Liberty, Platte City and St. Joseph are included in the warning, along with counties such as Jackson, Clay, Platte, Cass, Buchanan and Clinton. In eastern Kansas, the warning includes Johnson, Wyandotte, Leavenworth and Miami counties.

Emergency management officials advise residents to avoid outdoor burning entirely and delay activities that could produce sparks, including welding, debris burning or parking vehicles in tall grass.

Fire crews also warn that winds could carry embers long distances, potentially igniting new fires ahead of an active burn area.

Conditions should begin improving Saturday evening as humidity slowly increases and winds weaken, though dry weather could keep fire danger elevated into early next week.
