Winnipeg, Manitoba – A 17-year-old suspect is in custody after an alleged stabbing at a University of Manitoba recreation facility Thursday evening that left an adult man hospitalized.

According to the Winnipeg Police Service, officers were alerted to the incident around 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the 400 block of University Crescent. Investigators said the teen allegedly produced a knife without warning or provocation and allegedly assaulted a 32-year-old man inside the recreation center before fleeing the scene.

Witnesses reportedly provided aid to the victim until Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews arrived. The man was transported to a hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable, authorities said.

Police said West District General Patrol officers were flagged down by University of Manitoba security, who directed them to a Winnipeg transit bus the suspect had allegedly boarded while attempting to leave the area. Officers located the teen and took him into custody without further incident.

The case has since been turned over to the Major Crimes Unit. Investigators determined the suspect and victim allegedly knew each other, and the assault was not considered random. Authorities also confirmed neither individual is affiliated with the university.

The 17-year-old has been charged with assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon. The charges have not been proven in court. Police said the investigation remains ongoing.

No additional details about a motive have been released at this time.
