Wilmington, Delaware – Bright sunshine reflects off the Christina River this Sunday afternoon, but a developing weather system is already lining up to bring a much different scene by Monday. Dry roads and warm temperatures will dominate today, yet commuters could be dealing with steady rain and thunderstorms less than 24 hours from now.

According to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly, Sunday remains largely favorable for outdoor activities across northern Delaware. Temperatures are expected to reach around 87 degrees in Wilmington, while west winds occasionally gust near 20 mph. Clouds will gradually increase through the day, signaling the next weather maker approaching from the west.

Meteorologists are now tracking widespread showers expected Monday, with thunderstorms becoming possible after late morning. Rain chances climb to 90 percent during the day, making Monday the most impactful weather period in the current outlook.

The Monday afternoon commute could become noticeably slower along Interstate 95, Interstate 495, Route 202 and Route 141. Wet pavement, reduced visibility and localized ponding may create delays during periods of heavier rainfall. Travelers heading toward Philadelphia International Airport or moving between Delaware and southeastern Pennsylvania should monitor changing conditions closely.

While widespread severe weather is not currently anticipated, thunderstorms can still produce brief gusty winds, lightning and pockets of heavy rain. Tornado potential appears low at this time, but residents should remain weather-aware as thunderstorms develop.

Plan outdoor work, yard projects and recreational activities for Sunday while conditions remain favorable. Keep rain gear ready for Monday and allow extra travel time if commuting during the afternoon or evening.

Conditions gradually improve Tuesday as shower chances decrease to 30 percent and sunshine returns later in the day. By Wednesday, temperatures rebound into the mid-80s under sunny skies.

Looking farther ahead, longer-range outlooks favor above-normal temperatures across the Mid-Atlantic through late next week, reinforcing a growing summer pattern across Delaware.
