Providence, Rhode Island – Bright sunshine sparkles across Narragansett Bay this Sunday afternoon, but a significant weather change is developing that could bring wet roads, slower travel and scattered thunderstorms by Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Norton, Massachusetts, Sunday remains one of the better outdoor days of the week across Rhode Island. Temperatures will climb into the lower 80s under mostly sunny skies, while light winds and comfortable humidity create classic early-summer conditions.

That quiet stretch will not last.

Meteorologists are tracking an approaching weather system that is expected to increase rain chances across southern New England beginning Monday afternoon. Showers become more likely as the day progresses, with rain probabilities rising from 40 percent early Monday to 70 percent later in the day.

The greatest impact may arrive Monday evening and continue through the night. Rain chances increase to 90 percent, and thunderstorms are also possible before conditions gradually improve Tuesday morning.

Drivers on Interstate 95, Route 6, Interstate 195 and local roads throughout Providence County should prepare for changing conditions Monday afternoon and evening. Wet pavement, standing water in low-lying areas and reduced visibility could slow traffic during periods of heavier rainfall.

Travelers heading toward T.F. Green International Airport may also want to allow extra time. While widespread delays are not guaranteed, showers and thunderstorms can create temporary disruptions.

The severe weather threat currently appears limited, but thunderstorms can still produce localized downpours, gusty winds and frequent lightning. Residents should keep mobile devices charged and monitor weather updates if outdoor plans extend into Monday evening.

By Tuesday, only a lingering morning shower chance remains before sunshine returns. Temperatures rebound into the lower 80s, and Wednesday looks even warmer with highs near 84 degrees and abundant sunshine.

Long-range outlooks continue to support above-normal temperatures across southern New England later next week, reinforcing a growing summer pattern across Rhode Island.
