Raleigh, North Carolina – Fires could ignite and spread within minutes across central North Carolina starting late Saturday morning as dry air and gusty winds peak during the afternoon hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Raleigh, an increased fire danger is in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, driven by wind gusts up to 25 mph and relative humidity dropping as low as 20 to 25 percent. The highest risk centers on the western Piedmont, where fuels will dry fastest.

Cities including Durham, Greensboro, Fayetteville, and Rocky Mount will see conditions supportive of rapid fire growth, especially along open fields, wooded edges, and roadways like I-40 and US-1 where sparks from vehicles or equipment can spread quickly. Even small ignition sources, including discarded cigarettes or trailer chains, could trigger fast-moving grass fires.

Officials urge residents to avoid all outdoor burning, secure towing chains, and delay yard work that could create sparks. Power crews are also monitoring lines as gusty winds increase the chance of downed branches.

Conditions ease after sunset, but dry air lingers into Sunday. Additional advisories remain possible if low humidity continues into early next week.
