New York, New York – Bright sunshine is lighting up the skyline now, but a much wetter pattern is lining up for the start of the new workweek. Sidewalk cafes, parks, and beaches across the metro area are enjoying comfortable early-summer weather Sunday, yet conditions are expected to change quickly by Monday as a strong area of low pressure approaches the Northeast.

According to the National Weather Service in New York, hazardous weather is not expected Sunday. However, meteorologists are monitoring a period of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms developing Monday into Monday evening. The greatest concern centers on urban and poor-drainage flooding, especially in heavily paved areas of New York City and surrounding suburbs.

Across New York State, the immediate weather story remains quiet. Temperatures are expected to climb into the lower 80s Sunday under mostly sunny skies. In New York City, Central Park is expected to reach around 82 degrees with light west winds, creating a classic summer-like afternoon.

The weather turns more active late Sunday night. A few showers may develop after 2 a.m., then rain coverage expands rapidly Monday. Rain chances climb to 90%, and thunderstorms may develop after late morning. Wet pavement, reduced visibility, and slower travel are possible on the FDR Drive, Cross Bronx Expressway, Belt Parkway, and portions of I-95 through the region.

Plan extra travel time Monday afternoon. Keep umbrellas ready and monitor local alerts if you live in flood-prone neighborhoods. While severe weather is not specifically highlighted at this time, thunderstorms can still produce localized downpours and brief street flooding.

Conditions improve Tuesday with only a lingering shower chance before sunshine returns by midweek. Longer-range outlooks continue to suggest warmer-than-normal temperatures heading into late next week.

Traveling Monday or seeing changing conditions in your neighborhood? Keep an eye on local updates as additional advisories could be issued.
