Billings, Montana – Motorists traveling across south-central Montana on Tuesday could encounter difficult driving conditions as strong winds sweep across the region, with the highest gusts expected near the western foothills and along portions of Interstate 90.

According to the National Weather Service in Billings, warm and windy weather will dominate Tuesday before a cold front arrives Tuesday night. Wind gusts are forecast to reach 45 to 50 mph in several locations, including Livingston, Harlowton, Big Timber, Lewistown and areas west of Billings.

The strongest winds are expected during the afternoon and evening hours. Forecast probabilities show Livingston has a 90% chance of wind gusts exceeding 50 mph, while Harlowton carries an 80% chance and Big Timber a 70% chance. Billings also faces breezy conditions, with gusts generally ranging between 40 and 45 mph.

Travel impacts are likely along Interstate 90 and U.S. Highway 191, particularly for lightweight trailers, campers, semitrucks and other high-profile vehicles. Drivers should be prepared for sudden crosswinds and consider delaying travel or using alternate routes if conditions deteriorate.

Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor furniture, trash containers and other loose objects that could become airborne in strong winds.

A cold front moving through Tuesday night will bring scattered showers, cooler temperatures and continued breezy conditions into Wednesday. While the strongest winds should gradually diminish after the front passes, travelers and outdoor workers should remain prepared for changing weather conditions through midweek.

Additional weather statements could be issued if stronger wind gusts develop than currently forecast.
