Charleston, W.Va. – Temperatures dropping to 25°F by midnight tonight are set to trigger a widespread freeze across southern West Virginia, putting early-season crops, outdoor plumbing, and sensitive vegetation at immediate risk through the Saturday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Charleston, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from midnight through 10 a.m. Saturday for portions of northeast Kentucky, southwest Virginia, and much of southern and western West Virginia. Forecasters say sub-freezing conditions will persist for several hours before temperatures recover late Saturday morning.

Communities including Logan, Williamson, Welch, and Pineville will see the coldest readings before sunrise, with valleys especially vulnerable to frost buildup. In Wayne and Lincoln counties, residents could wake up to frozen pipes if outdoor systems remain exposed. Areas near I-64 and U.S. Route 52 may also experience patchy frost on elevated surfaces early Saturday.

Gardeners and homeowners should cover or bring in tender plants immediately and ensure hoses and outdoor plumbing are insulated or drained. Even a few hours at 25°F can kill unprotected vegetation and crack exposed pipes.

The freeze threat eases after 10 a.m. Saturday, but additional advisories remain possible if another cold surge develops into early next week.
