Duluth, Minn. – Fire danger ramps up within hours Saturday as dry air and gusty winds align, creating conditions that could allow flames to spread rapidly across central and eastern Minnesota.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Fire Weather Watch takes effect Saturday afternoon through Saturday evening for North Cass, South Cass, Crow Wing, Aitkin, and Pine counties. Southwest winds will reach 10 to 20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph while relative humidity drops to around 20 percent, a combination that can accelerate fire growth quickly.
Communities including Brainerd, Aitkin, and Hinckley sit in the highest-risk zone, where open fields, dry brush, and wooded areas can ignite easily. Fire officials warn that even small sparks from debris burning, equipment use, or campfires could lead to fast-moving grass or forest fires. Local emergency managers may restrict burning as conditions peak during the late afternoon hours.
Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning, secure trailer chains, and delay activities that could produce sparks. Keep water sources or extinguishers nearby if working outdoors.
Conditions ease after sunset Saturday, but additional alerts or a Red Flag Warning could follow if the threat intensifies.
