Kansas – Winds whip across open fields and city streets this morning, pushing dust and debris across roadways as drivers brace for strong gusts reaching up to 45 mph.
According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, a wind advisory remains in effect through mid-morning, with north winds between 25 and 35 mph and higher gusts creating hazardous travel, especially along I-35 and I-135. Loose objects may blow around, and small tree limbs could fall.
Conditions gradually settle by midday, but the bigger story quickly shifts to fire danger. Dry air and strengthening winds will support very high grassland fire risk across central and southern Kansas into the weekend. Avoid outdoor burning and stay alert in rural areas where fires can spread quickly.
Temperatures rebound fast. Highs climb into the mid-60s Saturday, then surge into the low 80s by Sunday and near the upper 80s by Monday. It will feel more like early summer than late March.
Travel improves after the morning winds ease, though breezy afternoons continue. High-profile vehicles should still use caution, especially on east-west roads.
Looking ahead, a more active pattern returns. Thunderstorm chances begin to develop Monday night and could persist into midweek. Some storms may bring brief heavy rain and lightning, though severe weather remains uncertain.
