Kansas City, Missouri – Residents across eastern Kansas and western Missouri have a brief stretch of quiet summer weather before thunderstorms return, including the potential for severe weather by Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Kansas City, dry conditions and mostly sunny skies will continue through Monday, with temperatures reaching the upper 70s and lower 80s across much of the region. The calm weather marks a temporary break before a more active pattern develops.

Cities including Kansas City, St. Joseph, Olathe, Independence and Warrensburg are expected to enjoy pleasant conditions Monday, with highs generally ranging from 79 to 82 degrees. Sunshine and light winds should make for favorable travel and outdoor conditions throughout the day.

The first opportunity for rain arrives early Tuesday morning as scattered showers and thunderstorms develop across portions of Kansas – Missouri. Forecast confidence remains high that storms will occur, but the National Weather Service notes the severe weather threat appears low at this time. Rain chances are currently around 20 percent, with many locations remaining dry.

Attention then turns to Wednesday, when a stronger weather system could bring severe thunderstorms to the region. Forecasters indicate the environment may support all severe weather hazards, including damaging wind gusts, large hail and localized flooding. However, uncertainty remains regarding the exact timing, storm coverage and storm mode.

Temperatures will continue warming ahead of the midweek system. Kansas City is forecast to climb from 79 degrees Monday to 82 degrees Tuesday before reaching 88 degrees Wednesday. Similar readings are expected across St. Joseph, Olathe, Sedalia and surrounding communities.

Residents should use the quieter weather through Tuesday to review severe weather safety plans and ensure they have multiple ways to receive warnings. Forecast details are expected to become clearer over the next 24 to 48 hours.

Additional watches, outlooks and advisories may be issued as confidence increases in Wednesday’s severe weather potential.
