Columbia, South Carolina – A statewide burning ban takes effect Friday as low humidity and gusty winds increase wildfire risk.

According to the South Carolina Forestry Commission, a State Forester’s Burning Ban will begin at 4 p.m. Friday, March 27, prohibiting outdoor burning in all counties. The restriction includes yard debris burning, prescribed burns, campfires and bonfires in unincorporated areas.

Officials said weather conditions are expected to create a high risk for fire ignition and rapid spread. Relative humidity levels are forecast to drop below 20% in some areas, while wind gusts could reach 25 to 30 mph, creating volatile fire conditions.

The ban does not apply to fires used for food preparation or those contained within approved enclosures such as grills or compliant fire pits.

The National Weather Service also indicated near-record heat across the region Friday, with temperatures climbing into the mid-to-upper 80s. Combined with dry fuels and wind, these conditions increase the likelihood of fast-moving wildfires.

Fire officials warned that any sparks could quickly lead to dangerous fire activity and urged residents to follow all restrictions.

The ban will remain in effect until further notice from the Forestry Commission.
