Pendleton, OR – A Heat Advisory remains in effect across parts of Oregon and Washington on Monday as temperatures are expected to surge into the 90s and approach 100 degrees in some locations.
According to the National Weather Service in Pendleton, the advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. PDT Monday for Central Oregon, the Eastern Columbia River Gorge in Oregon and Washington, the Kittitas Valley and the Yakima Valley.
Communities included in the advisory area include Bend, Redmond, Madras, Prineville, The Dalles, Arlington, Yakima, Sunnyside, Toppenish, Ellensburg, White Salmon and surrounding areas.
Forecasters expect afternoon high temperatures between 90 and 100 degrees. The agency warned that the heat will create a moderate to major risk of heat-related illnesses, especially for vulnerable populations and those spending extended time outdoors.
Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, remain in air-conditioned environments when possible and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day. Officials also emphasized never leaving children or pets unattended in vehicles.
Those who work outdoors are encouraged to schedule strenuous activities during the early morning or evening hours and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned locations.
The advisory comes as much of the Pacific Northwest experiences an early-season warmup that could challenge residents not yet acclimated to summer heat.
Anyone showing signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke should be moved to a cool location immediately. Heat stroke is a medical emergency and requires calling 911.
