Washington County, IN – Indiana State Police are investigating an apparent shooting and vehicle crash that left one person dead Saturday evening in rural Washington County.

According to Indiana State Police, the incident began around 7:30 p.m. Saturday when the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, local fire personnel and first responders were dispatched to an automated vehicle crash alert in the 8000 block of South Big Springs Road, approximately nine miles south of Salem.

After arriving at the scene, deputies requested assistance from Indiana State Police investigators. Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators from the Sellersburg Post responded and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Authorities said preliminary evidence indicates the case involves both an apparent shooting and a subsequent vehicle crash. Investigators spent Saturday evening collecting evidence and documenting the scene as they worked to determine exactly what occurred.

One individual was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim’s identity has not been released. State police said the name is being withheld as the investigation continues, although next of kin have been notified.

Investigators emphasized that the case remains in its earliest stages and that detectives are actively working to identify and interview all individuals who may have been involved or witnessed events leading up to the fatal incident.

According to Indiana State Police, there is currently no information indicating an ongoing threat to the public. However, authorities continue to examine evidence and reconstruct the timeline surrounding both the reported shooting and the crash.

No arrests have been announced, and investigators have not released additional details regarding a possible suspect, motive or the relationship between those involved.
