Alfred, ME – A late-night crash in York County led to the arrest of an Alfred man after authorities say two individuals fled the scene following a vehicle collision.
According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded shortly before midnight on Thursday, June 12, after receiving reports of a vehicle that had crashed into a utility pole on Kennebunk Road in Alfred. Authorities were then informed that two subjects had allegedly left the vehicle and fled the area on foot.
Deputies arriving at the scene requested assistance from the York County Sheriff’s Office K-9 team to help locate the individuals involved. Investigators followed a track into a nearby wooded area, where one of the suspects was found hiding, according to officials.
The suspect was identified as Paul Kastberg, 39, of Alfred.
Authorities said Kastberg was arrested and charged with Operating After Revocation (Habitual Offender), Leaving the Scene of a Crash, and Improper Plates.
Following his arrest, Kastberg was transported to the York County Jail. Officials said bail was set at $800. After being unable to post bail, he remained in custody and is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Monday, June 15, at the York Judicial Center in Biddeford.
Investigators noted that a second individual who allegedly fled from the vehicle has not yet been identified or located.
The Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains active as deputies continue efforts to determine the identity of the second suspect and gather additional details surrounding the crash.
Anyone with information related to the incident is encouraged to contact the York County Sheriff’s Office.
As with all criminal cases, the charges against Kastberg are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
