Michigan – Snow starts to fall in bursts across the Upper Peninsula this morning, quickly coating roads and cutting visibility as drivers head out. The snow isn’t constant, but when it hits, it hits fast.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, heavier snow showers today could produce rates near a half inch per hour and visibility dropping to around a half mile. Around 1 inch of total snowfall is expected, enough to create slick travel on untreated roads .

Across Marquette, Ishpeming, and Negaunee, roads like US-41 can turn slushy within minutes during heavier bursts. Temperatures hover near freezing, which makes conditions tricky. Snow melts, then refreezes quickly, increasing the risk of flash freezing later today and into early Saturday.

Plan extra time if you’re driving. Keep headlights on and allow extra stopping distance, especially on bridges and shaded roads where ice forms first.

Winds pick up at times, adding a light blowing snow effect that can briefly reduce visibility even further. Conditions may improve between bands, but don’t let that fool you. Another burst can move in quickly.

Saturday brings gradual improvement with highs in the mid-30s and only a slight chance of lingering snow showers. By Sunday, a noticeable warm-up pushes temperatures into the low 40s with partial sunshine.

The biggest shift comes Monday. Highs approach 40°F with drier conditions early, but showers return Monday night into Tuesday, signaling a more active spring pattern.
