South Carolina – Dry air and warming sunshine are already setting the stage across Spartanburg this morning, with grass and brush drying quickly under rising temperatures. By midday, the combination of warmth and low humidity will begin increasing fire risk across the Upstate. If you’re outdoors, conditions may look calm now, but the risk builds fast.

According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, a Fire Weather Watch takes effect Saturday from 8 a.m. through 11 p.m., driven by gusty winds and very low humidity. Winds from the northeast will range from 5 to 15 mph, with gusts reaching up to 30 mph, while relative humidity could drop as low as 14 percent.

That combination creates an environment where fires can start easily and spread rapidly. Areas across Spartanburg, Greenville, Anderson, and into northeast Georgia face the highest concern. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and even small sparks from equipment or grills could ignite dry vegetation.

Today remains warm and sunny, with highs near 88°F, helping dry fuels further ahead of Saturday’s peak risk. Conditions stay quiet tonight, with only a slight chance of showers, but that moisture will not be enough to significantly reduce fire danger.

Saturday brings cooler temperatures near the low 60s but much stronger winds, which will elevate fire spread potential through the afternoon and evening. By Sunday, calmer conditions return with highs in the mid-60s and reduced fire risk.

Looking ahead, temperatures rebound into the mid-70s by Monday with dry, stable spring weather continuing.
