Chicago, IL – Warm and mostly dry weather is expected across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana for much of the week, but forecasters warn dangerous swimming conditions could develop along Lake Michigan beaches by Wednesday and Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago office, temperatures inland are expected to climb into the low-to-mid 80s through midweek while cooler lake breezes keep shoreline communities noticeably colder.

Tuesday is expected to remain sunny and warm, with highs ranging from 81 to 86 degrees inland and temperatures in the 70s closer to the lake. Overnight lows are forecast to fall into the upper 50s and lower 60s.

Forecasters said a lake-enhanced cold front moving through Wednesday into Thursday will bring cooler conditions farther inland, along with increasing wave activity on Lake Michigan. High temperatures Wednesday are expected to range from 80 to 86 degrees before cooler air settles in Thursday with highs between 70 and 81 degrees.

The weather service also warned that waves and dangerous currents may create a “high swim risk” at Lake Michigan beaches, particularly on Thursday. Officials urge swimmers to remain aware of beach flags, avoid piers and breakwalls, and stay out of the water when hazardous conditions develop.

Despite the cooler lakeshore conditions later in the week, dry weather is expected to continue into Friday and Saturday with sunny skies and highs mainly in the 70s.

Residents planning beach trips or boating activities are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and beach hazard statements throughout the week.
