Mississippi’s humid air is already hanging heavy across Jackson late this morning, and darker storm clouds continue bubbling west of the metro as another active weather pattern settles over the Deep South. Wet pavement, standing water in low spots, and bursts of thunderstorm activity could quickly slow travel through the afternoon.
According to the National Weather Service, central Mississippi faces several consecutive days of showers and thunderstorms with rain chances staying elevated through at least Thursday. Jackson carries a 60% storm chance today, increasing again Tuesday and Wednesday as Gulf moisture surges northward.
The atmosphere remains unstable enough for a few stronger storms capable of gusty winds, frequent lightning, and isolated hail. Widespread severe weather is not expected, but forecasters say any stronger thunderstorm cluster could briefly intensify during peak daytime heating.
Heavy downpours may create localized flooding concerns near poorly drained roads and urban streets around Hinds County. Drivers along Interstate 55, Interstate 20, and Highway 49 should prepare for rapidly changing visibility during heavier rain bands.
Temperatures continue trending warmer despite the stormy setup. Jackson climbs into the middle 80s by Tuesday and Wednesday, adding more humidity and fueling additional afternoon thunderstorm development. The warmer air may also support isolated stronger storms later in the week across portions of Mississippi and Louisiana.
Across much of the eastern United States, a slow-moving frontal boundary continues producing widespread wet weather through Memorial Day. Multiple storm systems riding along that boundary will keep conditions unsettled from the Gulf Coast into the Ohio Valley.
For now, central Mississippi remains locked into a classic late-May pattern featuring tropical moisture, summer-like warmth, and nearly daily thunderstorm chances before a potentially warmer and slightly drier stretch develops later next week.
