Grand Island, Nebraska – Fires could ignite and spread within minutes Friday afternoon as extremely dry air and gusty winds create critical conditions across central and eastern Nebraska.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Red Flag Warning is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Friday for areas along and east of Highway 281, including Grand Island, Hastings, and York. Relative humidity is expected to drop to 15–20%, while north winds increase to 15–20 mph with gusts up to 30 mph.

Conditions worsen Saturday. A Fire Weather Watch is in place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. statewide as southerly winds strengthen to 20–30 mph with gusts reaching 40–45 mph. Humidity will again fall near 15%, creating an environment where any spark could lead to fast-moving grassfires.

Communities along I-80, including Kearney, Lexington, and Holdrege, face heightened risk, especially in open fields and rural areas where fuels remain dry.

Residents should avoid outdoor burning, secure equipment that may create sparks, and delay any activities that could ignite fires. Additional warnings may be issued as conditions evolve into the weekend.
