Lubbock, Texas – Powerful wind gusts up to 55 mph could make early Friday travel dangerous across the South Plains, especially before sunrise.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, a strong cold front will push through overnight, bringing sustained north winds of 30 to 40 mph with higher gusts peaking near 55 mph through the early morning hours. The strongest winds are expected before sunrise, impacting major routes including U.S. 84 and I-27.
Temperatures will drop sharply behind the front, with highs Friday struggling to reach the upper 50s in Lubbock, Plainview, and Levelland. Areas like Brownfield and Childress may see highs closer to 60 degrees, but the persistent wind will make it feel cooler throughout the day.
Blowing dust may reduce visibility in open areas, particularly west of Lubbock, while lightweight outdoor objects could be displaced or damaged.
Drivers, especially those in high-profile vehicles, should use caution during the morning commute. Secure loose items tonight and prepare for continued gusty conditions through Friday afternoon as cooler air settles across West Texas.
