Warm, sticky air drifted across downtown St. Louis late this morning while clouds slowly thinned over the Mississippi River. Wet pavement still lingered in pockets around the metro after early showers moved through before midday, but brighter skies have started pushing in from western Missouri.
According to the National Weather Service in St. Louis, rain chances decrease through the afternoon as temperatures climb toward the low 80s. Winds remain fairly light today, helping humidity settle over both eastern Missouri and southwestern Illinois.
Drivers crossing the Poplar Street Bridge or using I-64, I-44, and I-55 could still encounter isolated slick spots early this afternoon, especially where heavier showers passed earlier in the day. Conditions improve steadily heading into the evening, with quieter weather expected tonight and much of Memorial Day.
The calmer stretch does not last long. A more active weather pattern returns Tuesday as moisture surges back into the Mississippi Valley. Showers and thunderstorms become increasingly likely by late morning Tuesday and continue into Wednesday night. Some storms may produce brief downpours, gusty winds, and small hail, though widespread severe weather is not expected right now.
Temperatures also trend warmer through midweek. Highs rebound into the middle and upper 80s by Wednesday and Thursday, bringing a more summer-like feel across the bi-state region. Humidity levels will rise alongside those warmer temperatures, increasing the chance for repeated afternoon thunderstorms.
Residents planning outdoor events should keep phones charged and monitor updated radar alerts through the week. To be fair, dry stretches will still develop between rounds of rain, especially during the mornings.
Long-range signals continue pointing toward above-normal temperatures heading into early June across much of the Midwest.
